Ce dernier verset désigne l'acte divin qui est la cause efficiente (car) de la réconciliation dont parle l'apôtre. (versets 18-21) Celui qui jamais n'eut rien de commun avec le péché, dont la vie resta toujours pure et sainte, "Dieu l'a fait péché pour nous," c'est-àdire, a vu et puni en lui le péché. (Romains 8.3 ; Galates 3.13 ; comparez, sur l'expiation, Romains 3.23-25, notes.) Dieu ne l'a pas "traité comme un pécheur," comme un membre de la race déchue d'Adam, ainsi que le dit la paraphrase d'Ostervald, mais il a fait que le péché, le péché de tous (pour nous) fût sur lui, en présence du jugement divin. "Il a fait venir sur lui l'iniquité de nous tous." (Esaïe 53.6 ; comparez Romains 8.3)

Quiconque maintenant est uni à lui, un avec lui par une foi vivante, en un mot, quiconque est en lui, devient justice de Dieu, (Romains 1.17, note) en est revêtu, pénétré, de sorte que cette justice, d'abord imputée comme une justification, (Romains 4) devient notre nature morale, l'essence même de notre être le plus intime. En d'autres termes, Christ est devant Dieu ce que nous sommes, identifié avec le péché ; et nous devenons ce qu'il est, identifiés avec la justice parfaite de Dieu.

- Par cet enseignement de l'apôtre se trouve suffisamment réfutée l'opinion qu'on a voulu fonder sur ces versets, que la réconciliation est un acte qui n'aurait lieu que de la part de l'homme envers Dieu, attendu que Dieu, tout amour et miséricorde pour le pécheur, n'a pas besoin d'être réconcilié avec le pécheur. C'est là une pure négation de la justice de Dieu, c'est lui attribuer l'indifférence à l'égard du péché. Sans doute Dieu nous a réconcilies avec lui, (verset 18) mais c'est par l'œuvre de Christ, en qui Dieu était lui-même, c'est en n'imputant point le péché, (verset 19) parce que ce péché était expié à ses yeux. (verset 21)

"Ce n'est que dans ce sens que l'on peut concevoir la réconciliation comme un acte pour la promulgation duquel un ministère est établi dans l'économie nouvelle. (versets 19,20) Si la réconciliation n'avait lieu que du côté de l'homme, on ne pourrait prêcher autre chose sinon que Dieu a révélé son amour, en vertu de quoi la réconciliation est possible. Mais l'Eglise a, dès l'origine, prêché que la réconciliation a été accomplie sur Golgotha, et ce n'est qu'en vertu de ce fait que la prédication a la force de consoler et de régénérer." Olshausen.
