Après l'effusion de cœur qui précède, Paul est ému ;ses yeux, on le sent, se remplissent de larmes, (comparez 2Corinthiens 2.4) et un cri de tristesse, à la fois, et d'ardent amour s'échappe de son âme : "O vous que j'aime avec la tendresse d'un père ! (verset 13) vous le voyez, je vous ai ouvert tout mon cœur ; (verset 11) vous n'êtes point à l'étroit dans ce cœur, vous y occupez une large place ; mais vous !, parce que je vous ai paru sévère, parce qu'on vous a inspiré des préjugés, vous êtes rétrécis dans vos entrailles (trad. littér.), votre cœur se ferme et n'a plus ni confiance, ni amour ! (verset 12) Je vous en conjure comme mes enfants bien-aimés, rendez-moi amour pour amour, élargissez votre cœur et envers moi, et envers la vérité, et envers le Sauveur que je vous ai annoncé !"

De toutes manières, c'est l'Esprit de Dieu qui met le cœur au large.
