Segond 21 L'homme de Dieu s'irrita contre lui et dit : « Il fallait frapper 5 ou 6 fois ; alors tu aurais battu les Syriens jusqu'à leur extermination. Désormais, tu ne les battras que 3 fois. »

Segond 1910 L'homme de Dieu s'irrita contre lui, et dit : Il fallait frapper cinq ou six fois ; alors tu aurais battu les Syriens jusqu'à leur extermination ; maintenant tu les battras trois fois.

World English Bible The man of God was angry with him, and said, "You should have struck five or six times. Then you would have struck Syria until you had consumed it, whereas now you shall strike Syria just three times."

Frapper, à coup de flèches.

Jusqu'à en finir : jusqu'à réaliser complètement la promesse faite après le tir de la première flèche. Elisée avait comme donné au roi carte blanche ; celui-ci n'avait pas su en user, ou du moins en user assez richement. Le concours de la liberté humaine dans l'accomplissement des plans divins ressort clairement de cette histoire.
