World English Bible Now in the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month, which was the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, to Jerusalem.

La ville et le temple furent brûlés, et il est probable que l'arche subit le même sort. Par ces évènements, Dieu a montré combien peu Il s'inquiète de l'apparat extérieur de Son culte, quand la motivation et le zèle pour la piété sont négligés. Les murs de Jérusalem furent détruits, et le peuple déporté en captivité à Babylone. Les ustensiles du temple furent emportés par les pillards.

Dès que les divers éléments listés dans ce texte furent expatriés ou détruits, que devait-il rester à Jérusalem, qui puisse représenter l'adoration vouée à l'Éternel ? Il était juste pour ce Dernier, de priver de toute bénédiction qui pouvait découler de Son culte, ceux qui avait préféré honorer de faux dieux avant Lui ; les enfants d'Israël, qui auparavant, avaient beaucoup d'autels pour leurs idoles, n'en possédaient maintenant aucun !

De même que l'Éternel ne ménagea pas les anges qui sombrèrent dans le péché, qu'Il condamna à la disparition totale, la race humaine déchue, qu'Il précipita tous les incrédules en enfer, et qu'Il n'épargna même pas Son propre Fils, en Le laissant livrer pour nous tous, il est nul besoin de nous demander quel sort misérable Il peut réserver aux nations coupables, aux églises et aux personnes fautives.

      2 The captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said to him, Yahweh your God pronounced this evil on this place;
      3 and Yahweh has brought it, and done according as he spoke: because you have sinned against Yahweh, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing has come on you.
      4 Now, behold, I release you this day from the chains which are on your hand. If it seems good to you to come with me into Babylon, come, and I will take care of you; but if it seems bad to you to come with me into Babylon, don't: behold, all the land is before you; where it seems good and right to you to go, there go.
