Le tuèrent, comme il a été dit au verset 6, et, après cela, lui coupèrent la tête pour la porter à David.

De la Plaine : du Jourdain. Les mots toute la nuit ne prouvent point qu'ils arrivèrent à Hébron le lendemain matin, ce qui serait impossible, du moins si Isboseth demeurait encore à Mahanaïm ; car il y a une distance de 80 km entre cette ville et Hébron. Ces mots signifient qu'ils s'enfuirent le plus rapidement possible du lieu de leur crime.

On peut être ravi de voir ses souhaits exaucés, tout en regrettant vraiment les moyens par lesquels ils sont obtenus. David était désolé d'apprendre la mort d'une personne qui, soit disant, ne cherchait qu'à le tuer. Ces hommes répandirent le sang innocent, pour des motifs vraiment ignobles. David, en toute justice et par vengeance, les a fait exécuter. Un tel acte ne pouvait pas être répréhensible : Dieu l'avait déjà aidé, dans de nombreux cas, difficiles et dangereux ; en conséquence, Il affermit sa couronne de roi, accomplissant Ses propres desseins.

Quand Jésus mentionne Sa Rédemption, face à l'adversité, il en parle comme d'une chose accomplie ; bien qu'Il ait rencontré beaucoup « d'orages », destinés à Le contrer, Il savait que Celui qui l'avait déjà aidé jusqu'à présent, Le soutiendrait encore.
