Nous ne savons ce qui motiva un traitement aussi cruel, qui étonne d'autant plus que David avait été précédemment en excellents rapports avec ce peuple (1Samuel 22.3). Quelque offense grave que nous ignorons doit avoir provoqué ce châtiment. Les rabbins ont supposé que les parents de David avaient été massacrés en Moab ; mais ce fait n'aurait-il pas été mentionné ? On pourrait plutôt penser à une insulte pareille à celle dont se rendirent coupables les Ammonites (10.4).
