Grec : "Si quelqu'un n'obéit point à notre parole par la lettre, signalezle."

Ce que quelques-uns (Luther, Calvin, M. Rilliet entre autres) ont traduit : "Signalez-le par la lettre" (que vous nous écrirez), et ils pensent que Paul se réservait ainsi d'exercer lui-même cet acte de discipline. Gerlach aussi admet ce sens, qui n'est pourtant point probable.

D'autres encore traduisent : "Signalez-le par cette lettre," c'est-à-dire par l'autorité qu'elle vous donnera sur lui ; n'ayez plus de rapports avec lui, excluez-le. Cette interprétation aussi est forcée.

Dans la pensée de Paul, sa parole et sa lettre sont une même chose.

Ce qu'il avait dit au sujet du frère qui vit d'une manière déréglée (verset 6) se rapportait surtout aux communications personnelles avec lui ; maintenant, s'il n'obéit pas à l'exhortation de l'apôtre, il doit être publiquement signalé comme rebelle et exclu de toute communion avec l'Eglise, afin qu'il en ait de la confusion et, par là, qu'il rentre en lui-même. Néanmoins, de peur qu'il ne soit tout à fait découragé, l'apôtre veut que l'on unisse la charité à cet acte de sévérité. (verset 15)

C'est ici le premier exemple de discipline ecclésiastique dans l'Eglise primitive.
