Ce touchant éloge d'Onésiphore, cherchant à Rome le pauvre prisonnier de Jésus-Christ, sans avoir honte de sa chaîne, sans craindre les dangers auxquels il s'exposait, paraît faire allusion à des faits récents ; tandis que les services rendus par ce fidèle chrétien à Ephèse, Timothée lui-même en avait été témoin. (La plupart des versions portent : "combien de services il m'a rendus." Ce pronom n'est pas dans le texte.)

Paul exprime sa tendre reconnaissance pour ce disciple, en implorant par deux fois la miséricorde du Seigneur sur lui et sur sa famille. Ce dernier mot (2Timothée 1.16) peut faire penser que, lorsque Paul écrivait cette lettre, Onésiphore était mort.
