Therefore don't be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner; but endure hardship for the Good News according to the power of God,

Non seulement Timothée, comme tout serviteur de Dieu, ne doit point avoir honte du témoignage qu'il est appelé à rendre à JésusChrist au milieu du monde ; (Romains 1.16) mais Paul va l'inviter à se rendre auprès de lui, prisonnier à Rome, (2Timothée 4.9,21) au moment où il prévoit une mort sanglante. (2Timothée 4.6)

Il s'agit donc pour son disciple de partager son opprobre et ses dangers et de porter le témoignage de Jésus-Christ à ceux mêmes qui vont le faire mourir.

De là ces mots : ni de moi, son prisonnier (le prisonnier du Seigneur ; Philippiens 1.9 ; Ephésiens 3.1) ; de là aussi cette exhortation à souffrir avec lui. (Grec : "souffrir les maux") pour l'Evangile.

Et il y a des critiques qui trouvent cette exhortation indigne de Timothée, prétendant que c'était l'accuser de "lâcheté !" Paul, au contraire, sent le besoin de rappeler à Timothée, en un tel moment, la puissance de Dieu, dont il lui a déjà montré la source dans le Saint-Esprit (2Timothée 1.7)
