Il n'y a dans cette commission de Paul à Timothée pas un mot qui permette de penser que ce dernier recevait par là le pouvoir d'instituer lui-même des anciens, sans l'assentiment des Eglises, comme on l'a trop souvent prétendu.
Toute ce que l'apôtre recommande à son disciple, c'est de transmettre à d'autres les enseignements qu'il a entendus de lui.
Que ces enseignements concernassent surtout les devoirs des anciens, aptes eux-mêmes à enseigner, c'est ce qui est évident ; mais cela ne prouve nullement que Timothée pût les revêtir de ces charges de sa propre autorité, lui qui, bien que choisi par l'apôtre Paul, n'en avait pas moins reçu l'imposition des mains par tout le corps des anciens.
