Chapitre 21.

Grec : Ecoutez ma présente apologie auprès de vous.

Paul ne prononce ces mots qu'après s'être adressé avec respect et affection à cette multitude qui venait de le maltraiter et qui en voulait à sa vie.

Ces Juifs étaient encore ses frères ; et comme il voyait parmi eux, sans doute, des vieillards ou des membres du sanhédrin, il les honore du nom de pères.

L'apôtre s'adressa à la multitude furieuse avec son style coutumier, manifestant le respect et de la bonne volonté. Il retrace l'histoire des premiers pas de sa vie ; il indique que sa conversion fut le résultat de l'action divine.

Les pécheurs condamnés sont frappés d'aveuglement par le pouvoir des ténèbres ; il s’agit d’un aveuglement durable, identique à celui qui frappe les Juifs incrédules. Les pécheurs invétérés sont aussi aveuglés, comme l'a été Paul, non pas par les ténèbres, mais par la Lumière. Ils sont perdus, errants pour un temps, mais pour être ensuite rapidement éclairés par le Seigneur.

Le fait de témoigner simplement de ce que le Seigneur a accompli pour nous, de ce qu'Il nous a apporté, en professant et soutenant l’Évangile avec droiture, peu quelquefois toucher davantage le cœur des autres, plutôt que certains discours plus élaborés ; par de tels témoignages convaincants, la Vérité n’a pas besoin d’être démontrée tout de suite, dans Son intégralité, comme ce fut le cas lors de la conversion de l'apôtre Paul.
