Cette grande pensée que le Dieu infini, Créateur de l'univers, ne saurait habiter exclusivement dans un temple, œuvre de la main des hommes, condamnait le culte formaliste et pharisaïque du temps.

On croit, en écoutant Etienne, entendre un écho des paroles de Jésus. (Jean 4.21-24) Et cependant il n'exprime qu'une pensée formulée déjà en termes semblables par Salomon lui-même dans sa prière pour la dédicace du temple (verset 48 ; comparez 1Rois 8.27) ; puis il appuie encore cette pensée sur l'autorité d'un prophète. (Esaïe 66.1, cité presque exactement d'après les Septante.)
