C’est là que le peuple de Dieu a besoin d’endurance et de confiance (en Dieu) pour supporter patiemment (l’épreuve) tout en restant fidèle.

World English Bible If anyone is to go into captivity, he will go into captivity. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, he must be killed. Here is the endurance and the faith of the saints.

Le texte de la première phrase du verset est assez incertain.

La plupart des éditeurs adoptent le texte de A, dans lequel le verbe mène est sous-entendu.

Les mots : en captivité, après s'en va, manquent dans Sin., C, Q. etc.

- Ces paroles annoncent la ruine certaine des persécuteurs, pour l'encouragement des persécutés. (Comparer Esaïe 33.1 ; Genèse 9.6)

En même temps, ces derniers y trouvent un sérieux avertissement à ne pas employer les mêmes armes charnelles ; (comparez Matthieu 26.52) leurs seules armes légitimes sont indiquées ici : la foi et la patience. Celles ci se fondent sur la certitude du triomphe de la justice divine.
