La grande ville, d'après la plupart des interprètes, c'est Rome, que l'auteur appelle, dans ce même verset, Babylone la grande.

Mais cette expression désigne Jérusalem dans Apocalypse 11.8 ; or il s'agit ici du même jugement universel et définitif qui aura lieu a la fin du temps des nations. (Apocalypse 11.2) Celui-ci coïncide avec le temps où la bête dominera. (Apocalypse 13.5)

Le tremblement de terre ne détruit pas la grande ville ; mais la divise en trois parties, c'est-à-dire probablement que le sol sur lequel elle est bâtie se fend et que trois grandes crevasses se produisent, dans lesquelles la dixième partie de la ville et sept mille hommes sont engloutis, d'après Apocalypse 11.13.

Ce qui prouve qu'il s'agit bien de Jérusalem, c'est qu'à la grande ville sont opposées les villes des nations, qui, elles, s'écroulèrent, furent complètement détruites par le tremblement de terre. Parmi ces villes des nations, il en est une que le voyant distingue, c'est Babylone la grande, dont il va retracer la chute avec détails. (Apocalypse 17 et Apocalypse 18)

Ainsi la pensée a une marche suivie ; l'auteur ne revient pas à Babylone, après l'avoir une première foi mentionnée comme la grande ville.

- Dieu se souvint de Babylone. Le verbe est au passif en grec : Babylone la grande fut rappelée au souvenir devant Dieu.
