World English Bible If anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, may God take away his part from the tree of life, and out of the holy city, which are written in this book.

De semblables défenses de rien ajouter ni retrancher se trouvent dans le Deutéronome Deutéronome 4.2 ; 12.32. La menace formulée par Jean peut sembler d'une sévérité excessive. Luther y trouvait un motif de douter de l'authenticité de l'Apocalypse. Il ne faut pas oublier cependant que l'apôtre réclame un tel respect pour son écrit, parce qu'il y voit l'œuvre de Dieu. (Apocalypse 1.1)

Paul aussi prononce l'anathème sur quiconque annoncerait un autre Evangile que le sien, parce que cet Évangile, il l'avait reçu par une révélation de Jésus-Christ. (Galates 1.8,12) Il est vrai que Paul appelle la malédiction d'en haut sur ceux qui renverseraient les principes mêmes de l'Evangile de la grâce, tandis que Jean prononce la condamnation éternelle de ceux qui ajouteraient ou retrancheraient des paroles du livre de cette prophétie.

Mais des changements apportés, soit au tableau que l'Apocalypse trace de l'avenir, soit à ses exhortations pratiques, (Apocalypse 1.3, note) pouvaient avoir de graves conséquences. Ces altérations seraient propres à détourner les âmes de la vérité qui seule peut leur assurer une part de l'arbre de la vie. Elles exposeraient l'Eglise à se relâcher dans son attente vigilante du Seigneur, à voir son espérance diminuer et à être affaiblie dans les luttes redoutables qu'elle doit soutenir.
