La puissance destructrice n'est pas nommée, comme elle l'était dans les trois précédentes plaies.

Il est difficile de se représenter le phénomène, dont le caractère symbolique importe seul. Ce sera le commencement de l'éclipse totale de ces astres, annoncée Apocalypse 6.12 et suivants, Matthieu 24.29. Comparer Exode 10.21. Il y a littéralement : afin que...le jour n'éclaire pas son tiers.

- Les châtiments annoncés par les quatre premières trompettes n'atteignent l'homme que dans ses ressources dans le monde extérieur où il habite, tandis qu'aux trois dernières trompettes, c'est l'homme lui-même qui est frappé. Dans l'Apocalypse, comme dans la vie, les jugements de Dieu deviennent plus sévères jusqu'à ce que le pécheur fléchisse sous sa justice, ou périsse enfin dans le dernier de ces jugements.
