World English Bible Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

Grec : "Que votre parole soit toujours gracieuse (en grâce), assaisonnée de sel, pour savoir comment il vous faut répondre à un chacun."

La grâce de Dieu dans le cœur donne à la parole cette grâce que Paul recommande, et la communique aux autres. (Ephésiens 4.29, note.)

Mais la douceur de la grâce ne doit pas rendre les discours doucereux ; la vérité, la crainte de Dieu, le sérieux de la vie chrétienne lui donneront toujours ce sel dont l'action rend les aliments savoureux, digestibles, et en éloigne la corruption. (Marc 9.50 note.) Quiconque ne possède pas ce sel restera muet quand il faudra répondre, ou répétera à chacun les mêmes paroles, devenues insipides par leur banalité. La grâce et le sel de la parole l'approprient à un chacun.
