Faveur et grâce. Dieu met dans le cœur du chef des eunuques les sentiments qu'il éprouve lui-même pour les jeunes gens. Celui-ci, en effet, ne rejette pas leur prière, comme on aurait pu s'y attendre. D'un autre côté, il hésite à l'accorder, puisqu'il pourrait être facilement accusé d'infidélité ou de négligence, si la santé des jeunes gens venait à souffrir de ce régime exceptionnel. Il désire être dégagé de toute responsabilité dans cette affaire ; aussi Daniel se sent libre de s'adresser à l'officier subalterne duquel lui et ses amis dépendent directement.
