16 à 19 Exhortation finale.

Ce passage fait ressortir toute la solennité de l'engagement nouveau que Dieu et le peuple sorti du désert contractent l'un vis-à-vis de l'autre. Le peuple, en se présentant aujourd'hui à Dieu, le contraint en quelque sorte à s'engager envers lui, tout en se liant lui-même par la promesse d'une fidèle obéissance. Et Dieu à son tour, en venant au-devant de son peuple, contraint celui-ci à s'engager envers lui, tout en se liant lui-même par la promesse de sa bénédiction et de son secours. Israël en ce moment fait de Dieu son Dieu, comme Dieu fait du peuple son peuple. Par cette relation d'intime réciprocité, ce passage a un caractère unique. Il convient admirablement à la situation (aujourd'hui, versets 16, 17, 18). Comme à Sinaï l'alliance avait été conclue entre Dieu et le vieux peuple sorti d'Egypte, ainsi elle est en ce temps renouvelée entre Dieu et son peuple rajeuni, prêt à entrer dans Canaan.

Dans ce passage, Moïse fait respecter les préceptes établis auparavant. Il s'agissait des commandements divins : chaque Israélite devait donc s'y conformer toute sa vie durant, et ne pas se disputer avec son prochain ; il devait les respecter scrupuleusement, de tout son cœur et de toute son âme, sans hypocrisie.

Nous ne faisons que nous séduire nous-mêmes, tout en rompant nos engagements, si nous avons considéré le Seigneur comme notre Dieu, sans toutefois obéir à Ses commandements. Nous sommes élus pour l'obéissance, 1Pierre 1:2, pour être saints, Eph 1:4 ; nous sommes un peuple acquis, non seulement pour pratiquer simplement les bonnes œuvres, mais pour les faire avec zèle, Tite 2:14.

La sainteté est un véritable honneur, le seul chemin vers la perfection éternelle !
