Troisième danger : celui de manquer de confiance et de soumission dans les épreuves. Moïse rappelle ici au peuple ses murmures contre Dieu à Réphidim (Massa, Exode 17.1-7). Cependant il serait possible que le mot massa, qui signifie tentation, fût pris ici au sens propre et désignât plutôt la tentation, beaucoup plus grave dans ses conséquences, qui est racontée Nombres 20.1-13, et à laquelle il est fait allusion dans Psaumes 95.8, ou bien ces deux tentations réunies. Les avertissements précédents (versets 10 à 15) se rapportaient à l'abandon du seul vrai Dieu ; celui-ci tend à prévenir l'impatience et le murmure par lesquels l'homme cherche à faire agir le vrai Dieu autrement ou plus tôt qu'il ne le voulait.
