Deutéronome 7.16

Et tu consumeras tous les peuples que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te livre ; ton oeil ne les épargnera pas, et tu ne serviras pas leurs dieux, car ce serait un piège pour toi.

16 à 26 Troisième promesse : secours assuré dans la guerre. La destruction des Cananéens est une œuvre de foi dont le peuple ne doit se laisser détourner ni par la pitié (verset 16), ni par la peur (versets 17 à 21), ni par le regret de ne pouvoir s'approprier les richesses de ces peuples (versets 25 et 26).

Ce serait un piège pour toi. Ces mots portent non sur ce qui précède immédiatement, mais sur la recommandation : Ton œil sera sans pitié pour eux. En ménageant ces peuples, Israël se perdrait infailliblement lui-même. Ce verset est important. Il indique clairement le véritable sens de ce massacre des Cananéens qui a donné lieu à tant de critiques de la part des incrédules, et scandalisé souvent même des croyants. Ce qui est dit ici, montre clairement qu'Israël n'a point assouvi une cruauté gratuite et arbitraire, mais que Dieu a voulu le sauver et maintenir son règne ici-bas en préservant son peuple de la contagion de l'idolâtrie.
