Reconnais aujourd’hui que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, marche lui-même devant toi, comme un feu dévorant ; c’est lui qui les détruira, c’est lui qui les humiliera devant toi, et tu les déposséderas, tu les feras périr promptement, comme l’Éternel te l’a dit.

Feu consumant : emblème de la sainteté divine qui détruit le mal et celui qui s'obstine à s'y livrer (Psaumes 50.3 ; Hébreux 12.29). Nous voyons de nouveau ici que la conquête de Canaan n'a point été une conquête ordinaire, mais qu'elle a été un jugement exercé par le Dieu saint sur des peuples incurablement corrompus.

Qui les abaissera : soit par leur destruction même, soit par leur assujettissement.

Il les détruira..., tu les détruiras : Ce qu'Israël fera à ces peuples, c'est Dieu lui-même qui l'aura fait par lui.
