1 à 8 Ne pas se révolter contre l'ordre établi, même dans les temps d'oppression. La volupté n'est pas la seule tentation à laquelle l'homme doive et, à l'aide de la sagesse, puisse résister : il y a les entraînements politiques. Mais, avant d'aborder ce sujet, l'Ecclésiaste fait de nouveau (comparez 7.19) l'éloge de la sagesse et célèbre le bonheur de l'homme qui, laissant de côté les fausses maximes qui ont cours dans le monde (7.29), s'en tient à la loi suprême de la crainte de Dieu.

Qui comprend l'explication des choses, leur vraie valeur morale, sans que pour cela aient disparu tous les mystères (7.24). D'autres traduisent : la signification de la parole suivante, du proverbe que citerait la seconde partie du verset.

Lui enlève son air farouche. Les oppressions et les injustices aigrissent ; la sagesse rassérène les traits en apaisant le cœur (Psaumes 34.6 ; Proverbes 15.13).

Nul, parmi les riches, les puissants, les honorables, ou les « parvenus », ne sera plus parfait, utile, ou heureux, que le sage. Qui d'autre qu’un sage peut interpréter les paroles de Dieu, ou enseigner correctement Ses vérités et Ses dispensations ?

Quelle folie de voir ceux qui cèdent délibérément au péché, se révolter contre le Tout-Puissant ! Combien peut-on voir de personnes se fourvoyer ainsi, s’attirant la misère, dans cette vie comme dans l’au-delà !
