Dieu, dit l'apôtre, a fait abonder envers nous la richesse de sa grâce (dont le centre est le pardon des péchés), en toute sagesse et intelligence.

Par le premier de ces mots, on doit entendre la pleine connaissance qu'il nous a donnée de lui-même, de son salut, de notre état moral, de nos rapports nouveaux avec lui ; (Ephésiens 1.9,10) c'est toute une sagesse divine, remplaçant la sagesse humaine. Par le second, Paul désigne plutôt une vue claire et sûre de la vie, du monde, de la ligne de conduite que nous devons y suivre, en un mot, la sagesse pratique. (Comparer Colossiens 1.9)

Mais la connaissance désignée par l'un et l'autre terme n'est pas purement intellectuelle, puisqu'elle nous est communiquée par la Parole de Dieu et par son Esprit, et que les objets de cette connaissance sont de nature à intéresser surtout nos facultés morales, qui doivent en être pénétrées et renouvelées (Comparer Ephésiens 1.17,18)
