D'autres traduisent : "Afin que, étant enracinés et fondés dans l'amour, vous puissiez comprendre..."

- Cela revient au même pour le sens. Christ, demeurant en nous, y fait régner l'amour. Paul parle, dans ces versets, de l'amour de Dieu ou de Christ pour nous, non de notre amour pour lui ; mais l'apôtre demande que ses frères en soient pénétrés, qu'ils y plongent leurs racines, comme un arbre puissant plonge les siennes dans le sol, et que, fondés en lui, ils soient semblables à un édifice inébranlable.

Par cet amour, plus que par aucune de nos facultés intellectuelles, nous serons rendus capables de comprendre (Ephésiens 3.18) et de connaître, (Ephésiens 3.19) selon cette parole d'Augustin : "Si quelqu'un veut connaître Dieu, qu'il aime !"

Comprendre avec tous les saints, qui seuls ont l'intelligence spirituelle, et avec qui tout chrétien se sent dans une communion vivante qui l'élève et le fortifie. Comprendre quoi ? Paul ne le dit pas ; sa pensée s'agrandit et embrasse l'infini, qu'il désigne en ces termes sublimes : la largeur et la longueur et la profondeur et la hauteur.

Mais sans doute il veut parler de ce mystère de miséricorde et d'amour dont il a entretenu ses lecteurs dans la première partie de ce chapitre (Ephésiens 3.3,4,9) et qu'il contemple tout spécialement ici. Il demande à Dieu d'élever vers ce mystère toutes les aspirations de ses frères. Il proclame la largeur de cette miséricorde divine, qui s'étend à tout pays, à tout peuple, à tout pécheur ; la longueur, qui dure d'éternité en éternité en ce Sauveur qui jamais ne cesse d'aimer ; la hauteur, par laquelle une créature déchue est élevée du sein de sa poussière et de sa corruption jusqu'au trône de Dieu ; la profondeur, abîme insondable de cette miséricorde qui peut atteindre jusqu'au dernier des pécheurs dans sa dégradation. "Si nous ne comprenons pas encore ce mystère, contentons-nous, en attendant, d'imiter la charité de Dieu : sa profondeur, en secourant ceux qui sont dans la plus profonde misère ; sa largeur en embrassant dans l'amour de Dieu indistinctement tous les hommes, même ceux qui le méritent le moins ; sa longueur en ne nous bornant à rien et ne nous lassant jamais ; sa hauteur, en n'agissant que par lui comme notre principe, ne regardant que lui comme notre modèle, rapportant tout à lui comme à notre fin." - Ou si l'on préfère ne pas donner une signification particulière à chacune de ces quatre dimensions de l'amour du Seigneur, on peut y voir simplement l'expression de l'immensité de cet amour "qui enveloppe de toutes parts le croyant, qui s'étend dans tous les sens autour de lui à perte de vue."
