Tel est le but pour lequel Christ a donné les apôtres, les prophètes, etc. Ce verset, très simple en lui-même, est impossible à rendre littéralement, à cause de la différence des prépositions dont se sert l'apôtre, et que, faute de mieux, nous traduisons chaque fois par pour, ce qui donne l'idée de trois phrases coordonnées, de trois buts parallèles assignés aux dons que l'apôtre énumère au Ephésiens 4.11 ; ainsi ces dons auraient pour fins

1° le perfectionnement (ou le rétablissement) des saints ;

2° l'œuvre du service ;

3° l'édification du corps de Christ, le tout opéré uniquement par les hommes indiqués Ephésiens 4.11.

Tel est, en effet, selon le plus grand nombre des interprètes, le sens de ce verset. En y regardant de près, on se convaincra facilement que c'est là une erreur.

Le premier pour se rapporte seul directement aux charges indiquées Ephésiens 4.11 ; le grand but de celles-ci est de rétablir, de perfectionner les saints par tous ces dons de l'Esprit de Dieu. Ce sont les saints eux-mêmes, c'est-àdire tous les chrétiens qui sont ainsi rétablis pour (préposition grecque différente) l'œuvre du service (Grec : diaconie), c'est-à-dire pour l'action de charité, de dévouement imposée à tout disciple de Christ, selon le grand principe du sacerdoce universel.

Alors, et par là seulement, peut être atteint le troisième but : l'édification du corps de Christ, tout entier, se développant, grandissant, devenant un par cette sainte communion d'action et d'amour. Ce sens répond seul à d'autres enseignements tels que 1Corinthiens 12.4-7. D'ailleurs, il se retrouve développé ici même. (Ephésiens 4.16)

De là, pour tout chrétien, aussi bien que pour tout ministre de la Parole de Dieu, l'obligation sacrée de concourir selon sa mesure à ce grand dessein de Dieu ; car tout disciple de Jésus-Christ est un missionnaire. Mais il ne faut pas que cela lui fasse négliger en rien les devoirs les plus ordinaires de sa vocation terrestre.

- Il est à peine nécessaire d'observer que cet enseignement de l'apôtre n'exclut point les charges spéciales confiées par l'Eglise à tels de ses membres pour l'œuvre du service ou du ministère.
