World English Bible then I will distress Ariel, and there will be mourning and lamentation. She shall be to me as an altar hearth .

Les versets 1 et 2 sont le thème de tout ce qui suit : ils renferment sous une forme énigmatique et brève tout le contenu du reste du discours, l'annonce du châtiment et la promesse de la délivrance. Après cela, le prophète décrit en propres termes d'abord le châtiment (versets 3 et 4), puis la délivrance de Jérusalem (versets 5 à 8).

Je serrerai de près... Dieu est le véritable auteur du jugement qu'exécutent les Assyriens (10.5) ; ce sera donc lui qui en déterminera l'intensité et la durée.

Elle sera pour moi comme Ariel. Selon le sens qu'on donne au mot ariel, ces mots signifient, ou bien :
Le lion sera serré de toutes parts, jeté par terre, réduit à gémir ; mais il ne démentira pourtant pas sa nature de lion et ne sera pas vaincu ; c'est-à-dire : la foi des fidèles de Jérusalem ne succombera pas dans l'épreuve ; elle y grandira plutôt et ne sera pas confondue (voir au chapitre 37 l'héroïque foi d'Ezéchias, sans laquelle Jérusalem n'eût sans doute pas été délivrée) ;
ou bien :
Je délivrerai cette ville, parce que, quels que soient les péchés de ses habitants, elle est et demeure mon autel, mon sanctuaire.

      13 In your filthiness is lewdness: because I have cleansed you and you weren't cleansed, you shall not be cleansed from your filthiness any more, until I have caused my wrath toward you to rest.
