Le prophète passe à une autre forme de paganisme, celle qu'on peut appeler l'idolâtrie politique et qu'Israël a pratiquée en recherchant l'alliance des puissances païennes, conduite qui impliquait l'abandon du vrai Dieu et la confiance dans les dieux de ces peuples (voyez 7.4-13, notes ; 31.1-3 ; Jérémie 17.5-6).

Le roi : le grand roi, le roi d'Assyrie (30.33) dont Israël a recherché et obtenu l'alliance au prix de riches présents (huile, parfums, produits les plus estimés de la Palestine ; voyez 39.2) et en s'humiliant devant lui plus bas que terre (jusqu'aux enfers, expression hyperbolique, marquant le dernier degré de l'abaissement). Voir les rapports d'Achaz avec Tiglath-Piléser 2Rois 16.7 et suivants (comparez aussi l'alliance d'Ezéchias avec l'Egvpte, chapitres 30 et 31).
