Exode 28.1

Fais aussi approcher de toi, d'entre les enfants d'IsraĂ«l, Aaron ton frĂšre, avec ses fils, pour exercer devant moi la sacrificature : Aaron, Nadab et Abihu, ÉlĂ©azar et Ithamar, fils d'Aaron.

Jusqu'Ă  prĂ©sent, les chefs de famille Ă©taient les sacrificateurs, ce sont eux qui offraient les sacrifices ; dorĂ©navant, cette tĂąche ne devait ĂȘtre attribuĂ©e qu'Ă  la famille d'Aaron ; il en fut ainsi, jusqu'au temps de l'Ă©vangile, l'Ăšre de la nouvelle dispensation.

Les vĂȘtements saints n'Ă©taient pas uniquement destinĂ©s Ă  distinguer les sacrificateurs du reste du peuple, ils Ă©taient aussi l'emblĂšme d'une sainte conduite, signe d'une religion pleine de gloire et de beautĂ©, la marque d'un serviteur de Dieu, que personne ne devait mĂ©priser. Ces vĂȘtements reprĂ©sentaient aussi la gloire de la MajestĂ© divine, d'une BeautĂ© et d'une SaintetĂ© parfaites, manifestĂ©es en JĂ©sus-Christ le grand Sacrificateur.

De nos jours, au temps de l'Ă©vangile, lors de notre adoration, nous n'avons pas besoin d'ĂȘtre ornĂ©s de vĂȘtements coĂ»teux, brodĂ©s d'or fin ; par contre, nous devons ĂȘtre parĂ©s du salut, Ă©tant justifiĂ©s par Christ.

1 Ă  5 L'Ă©lection d'Aaron et de ses fils ; leurs vĂȘtements d'office.

Fais approcher, dans le sens de : Tu feras approcher. Cet ordre donnĂ© sur la montagne ne devait ĂȘtre exĂ©cutĂ© que plusieurs mois plus tard, lors de l'installation d'Aaron et de ses fils racontĂ©e LĂ©vitique 8.1-36

Nadab et Abihu : les deux fils aßnés d'Aaron, déjà spécialement distingués dans la cérémonie qui avait eu lieu pour la conclusion de l'alliance (Exode 24.1-9). Ils moururent pour avoir apporté sur l'autel un feu étranger (Lévitique 10.4 et suivants). Leurs frÚres Eléazar et Ithamar les remplacÚrent. La souveraine sacrificature appartint d'abord à Eléazar, puis à son fils Phinées (Josué 22.30 ; Juges 20.28). On ignore les raisons pour lesquelles elle passa durant la période des Juges à la ligne d'Ithamar ; car c'est à celle-ci qu'appartenait Eli, pÚre d'Ahimélec, qui est désigné comme descendant d'Ithamar (1Chroniques 24.3).

Les fonctions de souverain sacrificateur Ă©taient les suivantes :

  • Il avait la surveillance gĂ©nĂ©rale du culte, du temple et du trĂ©sor sacrĂ© (Nombres 4.16 ; 2Rois 12.7 ; 22.4).
  • Il offrait chaque jour l'oblation non sanglante qui accompagnait l'holocauste du matin et du soir, une moitiĂ© le matin, l'autre moitiĂ© le soir (LĂ©vitique 6.19-22).
  • Il offrait le grand sacrifice du jour des expiations et entrait ce jour-lĂ  dans le Lieu trĂšs saint (LĂ©vitique 16.1-34).
  • Il offrait aussi les sacrifices particuliers prescrits pour quelque faute nationale Ă  laquelle il aurait concouru (LĂ©vitique 4.3 et suivants).
  • Il pouvait quand il le trouvait bon, cĂ©lĂ©brer tous les actes de la sacrificature, et il le faisait le plus souvent, d'aprĂšs JosĂšphe, les jours de sabbat, de nouvelle lune et de fĂȘte.
  • Enfin il consultait l'Eternel au moyen de l'Urim et du Thummim dans les circonstances d'une gravitĂ© particuliĂšre pour la nation.

Depuis Josaphat il prit part à l'administration de la justice ; plus tard encore devint un personnage politique important comme président du sanhédrin.

Il se distinguait des simples sacrificateurs par la magnificence de ses vĂȘtements.
