C'est ici la liste des anciens habitants du pays, qui furent dépossédés par les Edomites, mais subsistèrent cependant et se fondirent peu à peu avec eux.

20 à 28 Fils de Séir

Voici les fils. Ici, comme dans beaucoup d'autres cas, fils signifie descendant à une génération quelconque, car on ne comprendrait pas que Thimna, fille de Séir (verset 22), qui a dû vivre à une époque antérieure à Abraham (14.6), pût devenir la concubine d'Eliphaz, arrière-petit-fils d'Abraham.

Séir, le Horien. Sur ces deux noms, voir 14.6, note. Le nom de Séir, comme tant d'autres, a dû désigner le pays avant d'être transporté à l'ancêtre de la race.

Qui habitaient le pays : avant l'arrivée d'Esaü.

On retrouve dans l'ancien pays d'Edom les traces de quelques-uns des noms mentionnés dans les versets suivants. La plupart de ces noms s'expliquent d'après l'arabe et sont des noms d'animaux, ce qui se comprend chez un peuple à demi sauvage, qui ne vit guère que de chasse. Nous rencontrons quelque chose d'analogue chez les Indiens d'Amérique.
