En ta qualité de beau-frère. Afin d'éviter l'extinction des familles, quand un homme mourait sans enfants, son frère ou, à défaut de frère, son plus proche parent épousait sa veuve, et le premier enfant né de cette union était envisagé comme fils du premier mari. Cette coutume antique, dont on retrouve des traces en Inde, en Perse, chez les Afghans, les Druses et jusqu'en Abyssinie, a passé pour les Juifs à l'état de loi dans Deutéronome 15.5-10
