1 For the law, having a shadow of the good to come, not the very image of the things, can never with the same sacrifices year by year, which they offer continually, make perfect those who draw near.2 Or else wouldn't they have ceased to be offered, because the worshippers, having been once cleansed, would have had no more consciousness of sins?3 But in those sacrifices there is a yearly reminder of sins.4 For it is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins.5 Therefore when he comes into the world, he says, "Sacrifice and offering you didn't desire, but you prepared a body for me;6 You had no pleasure in whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin.7 Then I said, 'Behold, I have come (in the scroll of the book it is written of me) to do your will, O God.'"8 Previously saying, "Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin you didn't desire, neither had pleasure in them" (those which are offered according to the law),9 then he has said, "Behold, I have come to do your will." He takes away the first, that he may establish the second,10 by which will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.11 Every priest indeed stands day by day serving and often offering the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins,12 but he, when he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God;13 from that time waiting until his enemies are made the footstool of his feet.14 For by one offering he has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.15 The Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying,16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them: 'After those days,' says the Lord, 'I will put my laws on their heart, I will also write them on their mind;'" then he says,17 "I will remember their sins and their iniquities no more."18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

19 Having therefore, brothers, boldness to enter into the holy place by the blood of Jesus,20 by the way which he dedicated for us, a new and living way, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;21 and having a great priest over God's house,22 let's draw near with a true heart in fullness of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and having our body washed with pure water,23 let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering; for he who promised is faithful.24 Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works,25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching.26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more a sacrifice for sins,27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and a fierceness of fire which will devour the adversaries.28 A man who disregards Moses' law dies without compassion on the word of two or three witnesses.29 How much worse punishment, do you think, will he be judged worthy of, who has trodden under foot the Son of God, and has counted the blood of the covenant with which he was sanctified an unholy thing, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?30 For we know him who said, "Vengeance belongs to me," says the Lord, "I will repay." Again, "The Lord will judge his people."31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.32 But remember the former days, in which, after you were enlightened, you endured a great struggle with sufferings;33 partly, being exposed to both reproaches and oppressions; and partly, becoming partakers with those who were treated so.34 For you both had compassion on me in my chains, and joyfully accepted the plundering of your possessions, knowing that you have for yourselves a better possession and an enduring one in the heavens.35 Therefore don't throw away your boldness, which has a great reward.36 For you need endurance so that, having done the will of God, you may receive the promise.37 "In a very little while, he who comes will come, and will not wait.38 But the righteous will live by faith. If he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him."39 But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the saving of the soul. -

1 La loi de Moïse ne reproduit pas exactement ce qui existe, elle est seulement l’ombre des biens qui seront donnés plus tard. Elle demande qu’on offre sans arrêt, chaque année, toujours les mêmes sacrifices. C’est pourquoi elle ne peut absolument pas rendre parfaits ceux qui s’approchent de Dieu.2 Sinon, ceux qui rendent ce culte à Dieu seraient lavés de leurs péchés une fois pour toutes. Ils ne se sentiraient plus du tout coupables, et on n’offrirait plus aucun sacrifice.3 Mais bien au contraire, ces sacrifices rappellent chaque année le souvenir des péchés,4 parce que le sang des taureaux et des boucs ne peut pas enlever les péchés.5 C’est pourquoi, au moment où le Christ va entrer dans le monde, il dit à Dieu : « Tu n’as pas voulu de sacrifices ni d’offrandes, mais tu m’as fait un corps.6 Les animaux brûlés sur l’autel et les sacrifices pour les péchés ne te plaisent pas.7 Alors je t’ai dit : “Me voici, je viens faire ce que tu veux. C’est ce qui est écrit à mon sujet dans les Livres Saints.” »8 Le Christ dit d’abord : « Tu n’as pas voulu de sacrifices, ni d’offrandes, ni d’animaux brûlés sur l’autel, ni de sacrifices pour les péchés, ils ne te plaisent pas. » Et pourtant, la loi demande qu’on offre tous ces sacrifices.9 Le Christ dit ensuite : « Me voici, je viens faire ce que tu veux. » Le Christ supprime les anciens sacrifices, il les remplace par le sien.10 Jésus-Christ a fait ce que Dieu voulait. Il a offert son corps une fois pour toutes, et nous sommes alors libérés du péché.11 Chaque prêtre se tient debout tous les jours pour faire le service de Dieu. Il offre souvent les mêmes sacrifices, mais ceux-ci ne pourront jamais enlever les péchés.12 Au contraire, le Christ a offert un seul sacrifice pour les péchés, puis il s’est assis pour toujours à la droite de Dieu.13 Maintenant, il attend que Dieu mette ses ennemis sous ses pieds.14 Avec une seule offrande, il a rendu parfaits pour toujours ceux qui sont libérés du péché.15 L’Esprit Saint nous l’affirme aussi en disant d’abord :16 « Le Seigneur dit : Voici l’alliance que je vais établir avec eux après ces jours-là. Je mettrai mes lois dans leur cœur, et je les écrirai dans leur intelligence. »17 Puis il ajoute : « Je ne me souviendrai plus de leurs péchés ni de leurs fautes. »18 Et quand les péchés sont pardonnés, on n’a plus besoin d’offrande pour les enlever.

19 Frères et sœurs chrétiens, nous sommes sûrs de pouvoir entrer librement dans le lieu très saint parce que Jésus a répandu son sang.20 Il a ouvert pour nous un chemin nouveau et vivant à travers le rideau du temple, c’est-à-dire à travers son corps humain.21 Et nous avons un grand-prêtre placé à la tête de la maison de Dieu.22 Notre cœur est nettoyé de tout ce qui le rend coupable, et notre corps a été lavé dans une eau pure. Alors approchons-nous de Dieu avec un cœur sincère et en croyant avec assurance.23 Affirmons ce que nous espérons sans nous décourager. Oui, Dieu a fait des promesses et il est fidèle.24 Prenons soin les uns des autres pour nous encourager à aimer et à faire le bien.25 N’abandonnons pas nos assemblées comme certains qui ont pris l’habitude de ne plus venir. Au contraire, aidons-nous davantage les uns les autres puisque, vous le voyez, le jour du Seigneur est proche.26 Nous avons appris à connaître la vérité. Après cela, si nous péchons exprès, aucun sacrifice ne peut plus enlever les péchés.27 Il n’y a plus qu’à attendre en tremblant ce qui va arriver, c’est-à-dire le jugement et un feu terrible qui brûlera les ennemis de Dieu.28 Quand quelqu’un n’obéit pas à la loi de Moïse, deux ou trois témoins doivent dire s’il est coupable. Dans ce cas, on le tue sans pitié.29 Celui qui méprise le Fils de Dieu méritera une punition encore plus dure, n’est-ce pas ? En effet, celui-là ne respecte pas le sang de l’alliance qui l’a libéré du péché. Il insulte l’Esprit Saint qui nous fait connaître la bonté de Dieu.30 Oui, nous connaissons celui qui a dit : « À moi la vengeance. Je donnerai à chacun ce qu’il mérite ! » Il a dit aussi : « Le Seigneur jugera son peuple. »31 C’est terrible de tomber entre les mains du Dieu vivant !32 Rappelez-vous ce qui s’est passé autrefois quand vous avez reçu la lumière de Dieu. Tout de suite après, vous avez beaucoup souffert et vous avez résisté en combattant durement.33 Ou bien on vous a insultés et on vous a fait souffrir devant tout le monde, ou encore, vous avez soutenu ceux qu’on traitait de cette façon.34 En effet, vous avez souffert avec ceux qui étaient en prison. Vous avez accepté avec joie qu’on vous arrache vos biens, parce que vous le saviez : vous possédiez une richesse plus grande et qui dure toujours.35 Alors ne perdez pas votre confiance, grâce à elle, vous recevrez une grande récompense.36 Vous avez besoin de patience pour faire ce que Dieu veut et obtenir ce qu’il promet.37 En effet, les Livres Saints disent : « Encore un peu de temps, très peu de temps, et celui qui vient sera là, il va venir bientôt. »38 Dieu dit : « Celui qui croit en moi est juste, et par là, il aura la vie. Mais s’il retourne en arrière, je ne mettrai plus ma joie en lui. »39 Nous, nous ne faisons pas partie de ceux qui retournent en arrière et qui se perdent. Nous croyons en Dieu, et nous serons sauvés.

Ces chrétiens convertis du judaïsme, tout en assistant encore aux solennités du culte juif, avaient entre eux des réunions particulières, qui leur étaient bien nécessaires pour s'affermir dans la foi, s'édifier, "se considérer les uns les autres," (Hébreux 10.24) s'exhorter. (Hébreux 10.26 ; comparez Hébreux 3.13) C'était, aux yeux de l'auteur, un mauvais signe quand des chrétiens abandonnaient leur assemblée pour se contenter du culte du temple ou de la synagogue, et il n'est pas étonnant qu'il fasse suivre cette exhortation de la redoutable déclaration qui se lit Hébreux 10.26 et suivants
Le jour du retour de Christ. Quel motif donne à cette exhortation la pensée de ce jour par excellence, ainsi nommé sans autre désignation ! (Comparer 1Corinthiens 3.13 ; 1Thessaloniciens 5.4)
La vie du chrétien ici bas doit être une attente continuelle de ce grand jour des décisions. Il est probable qu'au moment où notre auteur écrivait, les signes avant-coureurs de la guerre qui devait aboutir à la destruction de Jérusalem se montraient déjà de toutes parts. Or celle-ci était présentée, dans les derniers discours de Jésus, comme l'image et le prélude du jugement définitif. (Matthieu 24)
