Comme conclusion de ce qui précède sur l'incarnation, les souffrances et la sacrificature de Christ, l'auteur exhorte ses frères à considérer la fidélité du Médiateur de la nouvelle Alliance, qui est plus grand que Moïse dans la maison de Dieu.
Les versets Hébreux 3.1-6 ne sont pas un développement doctrinal, destiné à établir la supériorité de Jésus sur Moïse, comme Hébreux 1.1-14 établissait sa supériorité sur les anges. Celle-ci emportait logiquement celle-là, qui n'avait plus besoin d'être démontrée, la première étant prouvée. Si, dans l'exorde de sa parénèse, l'auteur insiste sur la supériorité de Christ, comparé à Moïse, c'est pour donner plus de force à son exhortation : tenez ferme votre espérance fondée sur lui. (Hébreux 3.6)

Plusieurs entendent ce mot du contenu de la foi chrétienne, des enseignements et des croyances qui se rapportent à Christ ; la confession chrétienne serait ici opposée à la confession mosaïque des Juifs. Mais le mot employé désigne dans le Nouveau Testament, et dans notre épître en particulier, l'acte de confesser sa foi. C'est pourquoi nous traduisons avec Luther et la plupart des interprètes modernes : "Considérez l'apôtre et le souverain Sacrificateur que nous confessons." (Comparer Hébreux 4.14 ; 10.23 ; 2Corinthiens 9.13 ; 1Timothée 6.12,13)
- L'auteur donne ici à Jésus le titre inusité d'apôtre. Ce nom, il l'entend dans sa signification première d'envoyé. Jésus est l'envoyé de Dieu, comme ses douze disciples furent ses envoyés. (Jean 20.21)
Quand il déclare si souvent que "le Père l'a envoyé," (Jean 5.36 ; 10.36) il se sert du verbe d'où dérive le mot apôtre. Ce titre résume les déclarations précédentes, que Dieu a parlé par son Fils, (Hébreux 1.1,2) qui est supérieur aux anges "envoyer pour servir en faveur de ceux qui doivent hériter du salut," (Hébreux 1.14) et par lequel l'Evangile a d'abord été annoncé (Hébreux 2.3)
De plus, en qualifiant Jésus d'apôtre, l'auteur introduit la comparaison qui va suivre entre Christ et Moïse. Moïse fut l'envoyé de Dieu dans l'ancienne Alliance, Christ l'est dans la nouvelle ; il est celui que Moïse avait annoncé à son peuple par ces mots : "L'Eternel te suscitera un prophète semblable à moi." (Deutéronome 18.15)
- Mais Christ a un autre office, que Moïse ne remplissait pas, et dont Aaron était chargé : celui de souverain sacrificateur. Ce nom déjà donné à Jésus, (Hébreux 2.17) rappelle ce qui a été dit de son œuvre dans Hébreux 2.6-18, et prépare ce qui sera abondamment développé dans la suite. (Hébreux 4.14-5.10 ; 8.1-10.18)
Les deux fonctions d'apôtre et de souverain sacrificateur sont étroitement unies (un seul article régit les deux titres) ; elles présentent les deux faces de l'œuvre de Jésus. L'auteur les rappelle pour relever l'importance de la "fidélité" dont Jésus a fait preuve (Hébreux 3.2) et qu'il invite ses lecteurs à considérer.
- Il faut remarquer que, dans tout ce parallèle entre Jésus-Christ et Moïse ou les souverains sacrificateurs israélites, la comparaison ne porte nullement sur les personnes (il n'y aurait là aucune comparaison possible), mais sur leurs offices respectifs.
La valeur, la dignité et la supériorité de Christ par rapport à Moïse sont démontrées dans ce texte. (\\# 1-6\\)
Christ est considéré dans ce texte comme « l'Apôtre de notre profession de foi », le « Messager », envoyé par Dieu aux hommes, le grand « Révélateur » de cette foi que nous professons avoir, et de cette espérance que nous déclarons posséder. Christ, le Messie, a été oint aussi bien pour la fonction d'Apôtre que pour celle de Souverain Sacrificateur. Jésus est notre Sauveur, Celui qui nous guérit de nos fautes, le grand Médecin des âmes !Les Hébreux sont prévenus du péché et du danger de l'incrédulité. (\\# 7-13\\)
La nécessité de croire en Christ, et de Le suivre avec assiduité. (\\# 14-19\\)
Considérez-Le ainsi ! Considérons ce qu'Il est en lui-même, ce qu'Il est pour nous, et ce qu'Il sera plus tard et à jamais ! Quand nous méditons sérieusement sur la personne de Christ, nous sommes amenés à mieux Le connaître, et à l’aimer.
Les Juifs avaient une haute opinion de la fidélité de Moïse, mais celui-ci n’était cependant qu'une « image de Christ ». Christ est le Maître de la maison décrite dans ce texte, le Maître de Son Église, de Son peuple ; Il en est le « Constructeur ». Moïse était un serviteur fidèle ; Christ, en tant que Fils éternel de Dieu, est le « Propriétaire » légitime de cette « maison spirituelle », le Dirigeant souverain de l'Église.
Il ne suffit pas d’emprunter fidèlement les voies que Christ nous a tracées, il faut aussi les suivre avec persévérance, et ce, jusqu'à la fin. Toute méditation sur Sa personne et Son salut, nous conduira vers la Sagesse, et nous aurons de nouveaux motifs pour L'aimer, Lui accorder notre confiance et Lui obéir !
