Sans aucun doute, c’est le plus grand qui bénit le plus petit.
Or, incontestablement, c’est l’inférieur qui est béni par le supérieur.

Grec : Or, sans aucune contradiction ce qui est moindre est béni par ce qui est plus grand.

- Nous trouvons ici (Hébreux 7.4-10) un autre point à considérer dans le rôle joué par Melchisédek : de cette considération ressortira la supériorité de la sacrificature de Christ sur celle des lévites. (Comparer Hébreux 7.1, note.)

Cette sacrificature de Christ, l'auteur la voit, en effet, représentée dans celle de Melchisédek, dont il établit la grandeur par deux raisons :

1° Abraham, le patriarche, qui avait reçu les promesses relatives à l'élection du peuple et au salut des nations, qui fut le père de tous les lévites, qui était plus grand qu'eux tous par la place qu'il occupe dans le règne de Dieu, rendit hommage à la sacrificature royale de Melchisédek en lui payant la dîme.

Cette dîme que ceux d'entre les fils de Lévi qui reçoivent la sacrificature ont, selon la loi, ordre de lever sur le peuple, cette dîme qui était un sacrifice fait à Dieu dans la personne de ses ministres, et que ces derniers prélevaient sur leurs frères, bien que les uns et les autres eussent l'honneur de descendre d'Abraham, (Hébreux 7.5) cette dîme, Abraham la paya à un étranger qui n'y avait aucun droit selon la foi, n'étant pas lévite par sa généalogie, et uniquement parce qu'il reconnut en lui le "sacrificateur du Dieu souverain," (Hébreux 7.1 ; Genèse 14.18) plus élevé que lui-même et que tous ses descendants. (Hébreux 7.6)

2° Abraham reçut de lui la bénédiction, une bénédiction réelle venant de Dieu, d'où l'auteur conclut (Hébreux 7.7) qu'il devait, par sa dignité religieuse, être supérieur à Abraham et à tous ceux qui, plus tard, descendirent de lui. Or, si tout cela est vrai de Melchisédek, qui n'avait que le symbole de la sacrificature éternelle, combien plus de Celui qui devait en posséder la réalité !
