Matthieu 5.7. Grec : "La miséricorde se glorifie contre le jugement."

Le jugement menace le pécheur ; mais la charité qui anime le chrétien lui communique la joyeuse assurance qu'il échappera à la condamnation. C'est la victoire que l'amour de Dieu, répandu dans le cœur de ses enfants, remporte sur les châtiments de sa justice.

Calvin entend ici par miséricorde la miséricorde de Dieu, par laquelle Dieu pardonne au pécheur, et triomphe ainsi de son propre jugement. Le contexte ne fait pas penser à Dieu, mais cette interprétation renferme une part de vérité, en ce que la miséricorde humaine n'est qu'un rejet de la divine miséricorde.
