Ces paroles indiquent ce que Jacques entend par la fausse foi qu'il combat : Tu crois qu'il y a un seul Dieu : tu fais bien ; approbation sans ironie, mais voici la valeur de cette foi : les démons aussi croient qu'il y a un Dieu et ils tremblent ; leur foi n'est que la connaissance purement intellectuelle d'un fait qu'ils sont contraints d'admettre, quelque intérêt qu'ils eussent à le nier.

Mais comme cette connaissance ne produit chez eux que de l'effroi et de la haine, elle ne peut les sauver. Il en est ainsi de la certitude que Dieu existe, quand elle reste sans effet sur la vie morale et ne devient pas la confiance d'un cœur qui se donne tout entier à l'Auteur de toute grâce. (Jacques 1.3-5)
