Les versets versets 5-7, introduits par cette apostrophe : mes frères bien-aimés, destinée à relever l'importance des considérations qui suivent, montrent à quel point leur conduite est en contradiction avec leur foi : Dieu honore le pauvre et vous le déshonorez, par des procédés comme celui qui est décrit versets 2-4 !

L'honneur que Dieu fait aux pauvres consiste en ceci : Dieu (verset 5) les a choisis (grec élus 1Corinthiens 1.27), non parce qu'ils sont pauvres, non parce qu'ils sont riches en foi, bien moins encore parce qu'ils seraient, en tant que pauvres, héritiers du royaume, mais par sa pure grâce, (Jacques 1.18 1re note) pour les faire riches en foi et héritiers de son royaume.

Leur pauvreté n'est donc pas un titre à cette élection, mais elle est un moyen dont Dieu se sert pour accomplir les desseins de sa grâce. Le sentiment de leur misère terrestre, de l'oppression et des privations dans lesquelles ils vivent, excite en eux, beaucoup plus facilement que chez les riches, le besoin de la grâce qui les enrichira. Il leur fait chercher le royaume des cieux, qui sera pour eux une abondante compensation à leurs souffrances. (Matthieu 6.33 ; 2Corinthiens 4.17,18)

Dieu, d'ailleurs, se plaît à élever ce qui est bas, afin de confondre toute hauteur qui s'oppose à son règne. (Comparer Luc 1.52,53, et surtout 1Corinthiens 1.26-28)

Cette explication est la plus conforme à la pensée générale du Nouveau Testament, comme aux termes de notre passage. Celui-ci porte littéralement : "Dieu n'a-t-il pas choisi les pauvres selon le monde, riches en foi et héritiers du royaume ?"

Quelques interprètes font des mots riches en foi et héritiers...l'apposition des mots les pauvres ; mais, avec cette construction, le verbe a choisi est privé du complément qu'il demande.

- Le texte le plus autorisé (majusc) porte, non les pauvres du monde, mais les pauvres selon le monde (datif), ce que les uns interprètent : "aux yeux du monde," les autres : "en biens de ce monde." Ce dernier sens est préférable comme formant antithèse aux riches en foi.
