D'après Luc, Jésus aurait adressé sa question aux scribes qui venaient d'approuver sa réponse aux sadducéens, (verset 39) et cela immédiatement après celle-ci, tandis que Matthieu (Matthieu 22.34 et suivants) place, entre ces deux faits, un entretien avec des pharisiens, auxquels Jésus aurait ensuite posé sa question concernant le fils de David.

D'après Marc, Jésus interroge, d'une manière générale, la foule sur l'enseignement des scribes. Accord sur le fond, variété dans le détail des récits.
