Ce verset est très difficile, et aucune des explications données ne nous a paru suffisante. Comment accorder ces deux déterminations pendant le jour et lorsqu'ils partaient, dont l'une s'applique à la journée tout entière, l'autre uniquement au moment du départ matinal ? Et que signifient les mots au-dessus d'eux ? Sont-ils pris au sens physique, pour dire que la colonne se changeait en un immense rideau couvrant l'espace de quelques lieues qu'occupait le peuple, ou dans le sens purement moral d'abri protecteur (Psaumes 105.39) ? Deux explications également invraisemblables. Il faut, croyons-nous, rapporter le pronom eux non au peuple, mais aux porteurs de l'arche (voir, pour l'emploi très libre de ce pronom, au verset 21). Ainsi la nuée marchait couvrant l'arche et ses porteurs, de même qu'elle la couvrait dans le Lieu très saint, et cela de jour durant la marche, dès le moment où on la portait hors du camp pour suivre la nuée, lorsque celle-ci quittait la place centrale qu'elle avait occupée durant la nuit, et allait se mettre en tête du cortège. Ce sens rend compte de la liaison de ce verset aux deux suivants qui de tout temps a été un problème pour l'interprétation.

Du camp. La préposition min (du) exprime une séparation, une sortie ; cette notion ne saurait s'appliquer au peuple qui ne sortait pas du camp puisqu'il l'emportait avec lui ; à moins que par le terme machané (camp) on ne voulût entendre ici le lieu de campement ; mais l'hébreu ne permet pas ce sens. Il faut donc reconnaître qu'il s'agit de l'arche et de ses porteurs qui s'avançaient hors du camp et continuaient leur marche sous la nuée.
