Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer, and put fire from off the altar in it, and lay incense on it, and carry it quickly to the congregation, and make atonement for them; for wrath has gone out from Yahweh! The plague has begun."

Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and behold, the plague has begun among the people: and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people.

Dans l'arrière-tente (koubba). Ce mot, dérivé de l'arabe, où il signifie endroit voûté (d'où par l'intermédiaire de l'espagnol notre mot alcôve), désigne cette partie de la tente reculée qui, chez les riches Bédouins, sert d'appartement aux femmes et de chambre à coucher.
Cet acte de Phinées n'était point l'accomplissement d'un devoir officiel ; c'était l'inspiration subite d'une sainte indignation. Il est resté comme un exemple sur lequel les Juifs ont basé ce qu'on a appelé le droit des zélotes, en quelque sorte la loi de Lynch israélite, d'après laquelle tout israélite, en cas de mépris flagrant de l'honneur de Dieu, peut intervenir sans jugement contre le coupable.
Et la plaie s'arrêta. Ce résultat, qui devait être celui du châtiment des coupables, fut immédiatement obtenu par l'acte de Phinées ; voir l'effet tout semblable du parfum de l'encensoir d'Aaron, 16.46-47.
