Faites le relevé de toute la communauté des Israélites, depuis l’âge de vingt ans et au-dessus, selon leurs familles, de tous ceux d’Israël qui peuvent prendre les armes.

Moïse et le sacrificateur Éléazar leur parlèrent dans les plaines de Moab, près du Jourdain, vis-à-vis de Jéricho. Ils dirent :

(On fera le relevé) depuis l’âge de vingt ans et au-dessus, comme l’Éternel l’avait ordonné à Moïse et aux fils d’Israël, qui sortaient du pays d’Égypte.

Ruben, premier-né d’Israël. Fils de Ruben : de Hénok (descend) le clan des Hénokites ; de Pallou le clan des Pallouites ;

de Hetsrôn le clan des Hetsronites ; de Karmi le clan des Karmites.

La terre ouvrit sa bouche et les engloutit avec Qoré, quand moururent ceux de sa troupe, et que le feu consuma les deux cent cinquante hommes : ils servirent au peuple d’avertissement.

A ceux qui sont en plus grand nombre tu donneras un héritage plus grand, et à ceux qui sont en plus petit nombre tu donneras un héritage plus petit ; on donnera à chacun son héritage d’après le dénombrement.

Mais le partage du pays aura lieu par le sort ; ils le recevront en héritage selon les noms des tribus de leurs pères.

C’est par le sort que l’héritage sera partagé entre ceux qui sont en grand nombre et ceux qui sont en petit nombre.

Voici les Lévites qui furent dénombrés selon leurs clans : de Guerchôn (descend) le clan des Guerchonites ; de Qehath, le clan des Qehatites ; de Merari, le clan des Merarites.

Voici les clans de Lévi : le clan des Libnites, le clan des Hébronites, le clan des Mahlites, le clan des Mouchites, le clan des Qoréites. Qehath engendra Amram.

Le nom de la femme d’Amram était Yokébed, fille de Lévi, laquelle naquit à Lévi, en Égypte ; elle enfanta à Amram : Aaron, Moïse et Miryam, leur sœur.

Tels sont ceux qui furent dénombrés par Moïse et le sacrificateur Éléazar dans les plaines de Moab, près du Jourdain, (vis-à-vis) de Jéricho.

Parmi eux, il n’y avait aucun de ceux qui avaient été dénombrés par Moïse et le sacrificateur Aaron. Ils avaient dénombré les Israélites dans le désert du Sinaï.

Car l’Éternel avait dit : Ils mourront dans le désert, et il n’en restait pas un, excepté Caleb, fils de Yephounné, et Josué, fils de Noun.
