3 I thank my God whenever I remember you,4 always in every request of mine on behalf of you all making my requests with joy,5 for your partnership in furtherance of the Good News from the first day until now;6 being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.7 It is even right for me to think this way on behalf of all of you, because I have you in my heart, because, both in my bonds and in the defense and confirmation of the Good News, you all are partakers with me of grace.8 For God is my witness, how I long after all of you in the tender mercies of Christ Jesus.9 This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment;10 so that you may approve the things that are excellent; that you may be sincere and without offense to the day of Christ;11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.La vie, c'est le Christ
12 Now I desire to have you know, brothers, that the things which happened to me have turned out rather to the progress of the Good News;13 so that it became evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my bonds are in Christ;14 and that most of the brothers in the Lord, being confident through my bonds, are more abundantly bold to speak the word of God without fear.15 Some indeed preach Christ even out of envy and strife, and some also out of good will.16 The former insincerely preach Christ from selfish ambition, thinking that they add affliction to my chains;17 but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the Good News.18 What does it matter? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed. I rejoice in this, yes, and will rejoice.19 For I know that this will turn out to my salvation, through your supplication and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,20 according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will in no way be disappointed, but with all boldness, as always, now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life, or by death.21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.22 But if I live on in the flesh, this will bring fruit from my work; yet I don't know what I will choose.23 But I am in a dilemma between the two, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.24 Yet, to remain in the flesh is more needful for your sake.25 Having this confidence, I know that I will remain, yes, and remain with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith,26 that your rejoicing may abound in Christ Jesus in me through my presence with you again.27 Only let your way of life be worthy of the Good News of Christ, that, whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your state, that you stand firm in one spirit, with one soul striving for the faith of the Good News;28 and in nothing frightened by the adversaries, which is for them a proof of destruction, but to you of salvation, and that from God.29 Because it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in him, but also to suffer on his behalf,30 having the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear is in me. -

3 Je rends grâce à mon Dieu toutes les fois que je me souviens de vous ;4 je ne cesse, dans toutes mes prières pour vous tous, de prier avec joie,5 à cause de la part que vous prenez à l’Évangile depuis le premier jour jusqu’à maintenant.6 Je suis persuadé que celui qui a commencé en vous une œuvre bonne, en poursuivra l’achèvement jusqu’au jour du Christ-Jésus.7 Il est juste que j’aie pour vous de telles pensées, parce que je vous porte dans mon cœur, et que, dans mes chaînes comme dans la défense et l’affermissement de l’Évangile, vous participez tous à la même grâce que moi.8 Car Dieu m’est témoin que je vous chéris tous avec la tendresse du Christ-Jésus.9 Et ce que je demande dans mes prières, c’est que votre amour abonde de plus en plus en connaissance et en vraie sensibilité ;10 qu’ainsi vous sachiez apprécier ce qui est important, afin d’être sincères et irréprochables pour le jour de Christ,11 remplis du fruit de justice (qui vient) par Jésus-Christ, à la gloire et à la louange de Dieu.La vie, c'est le Christ
12 Je veux que vous le sachiez, frères : ce qui m’est arrivé a plutôt contribué aux progrès de l’Évangile.13 En effet, dans tout le prétoire et partout ailleurs, il est devenu manifeste que c’est pour Christ que je suis dans les chaînes :14 la plupart des frères, confiants dans le Seigneur en raison de mes chaînes ont beaucoup plus de hardiesse pour annoncer sans crainte la parole de Dieu.15 Certains, il est vrai, prêchent le Christ par envie et rivalité, mais d’autres le font dans des dispositions bienveillantes.16 Ceux-ci agissent par amour, sachant que je suis établi pour la défense de l’Évangile,17 tandis que ceux-là annoncent le Christ dans un esprit de rivalité ; leurs intentions ne sont pas pures, et ils pensent ajouter quelque tribulation à mes chaînes.18 Qu’importe ! De toute manière, que ce soit sous un faux prétexte ou que ce soit en vérité, Christ est annoncé ; je m’en réjouis et je m’en réjouirai encore,19 car je sais que cela tournera à mon salut, grâce à vos prières et à l’assistance de l’Esprit de Jésus-Christ ;20 selon mon ardent désir et mon espérance, je n’aurai honte de rien. Mais maintenant comme toujours, Christ sera exalté dans mon corps, avec une pleine assurance, soit par ma vie, soit par ma mort ;21 car pour moi, Christ est ma vie et la mort m’est un gain.22 Mais est-ce utile pour mon œuvre que je vive dans la chair ? Que dois-je préférer ? Je ne sais.23 Je suis pressé des deux côtés : j’ai le désir de m’en aller et d’être avec Christ, ce qui est de beaucoup le meilleur ;24 mais à cause de vous, il est plus nécessaire que je demeure dans la chair.25 J’en suis persuadé, je le sais : je resterai et je séjournerai auprès de vous tous, pour votre progrès et pour votre joie dans la foi.26 Mon retour auprès de vous, vous donnera ainsi un nouveau et abondant sujet de vous glorifier à cause de moi en Christ-Jésus.27 Seulement, conduisez-vous d’une manière digne de l’Évangile du Christ, afin que, soit que je vienne vous voir, soit que je reste absent, j’entende dire de vous que vous demeurez fermes dans un même esprit, combattant d’une même âme pour la foi de l’Évangile28 sans vous laisser aucunement intimider par les adversaires. C’est pour eux une preuve de perdition, mais pour vous de salut,29 et cela de la part de Dieu ; car il vous a été fait la grâce non seulement de croire en Christ, mais encore de souffrir pour lui,30 en soutenant le même combat que vous m’avez vu livrer et que, vous l’apprenez, je livre encore maintenant.
