Philippiens 1.7

Paul montre combien est justifiée, et légitime de sa part, cette certitude qu'il a du salut final de ses frères de Philippes.

Les mots soit dans mes liens, soit dans la défense et la confirmation de l'Evangile peuvent se rattacher à ceux qui précèdent : je vous porte dans mon cœur. L'apôtre justifierait son assurance de leur salut en la fondant sur son affection pour eux qui, loin d'être relâchée, est fortifiée par la captivité qu'il endure.

Mais ces mots peuvent se rattacher aussi à ceux qui suivent : "vous tous étant participants avec moi de la grâce," (grec), et l'apôtre voudrait dire : "Je vous ai dans mon cœur, vous qui, dans mes liens, dans mes souffrances et mes travaux, êtes tous participants de la grâce, de cette grâce de souffrir pour le nom de Christ ;" il invoquerait comme motif de son assurance, non pas tant le fait qu'il les porte dans son cœur, que le fait qu'ils ont part eux aussi aux souffrances pour la cause du Sauveur. (Comparer verset 29)

Cette pensée rend mieux compte de l'assurance de l'apôtre. Quand on voit des chrétiens souffrir pour leur Maître, il est juste de croire qu'ils sont en état de grâce.
