Le verset verset 8 n'est pas une simple répétition de verset 7.

Paul veut dire : "Ce n'est pas seulement alors dans le premier feu de la conversion, que j'ai considéré ces choses comme une perte ; mais encore plus maintenant, après une longue expérience de la vie chrétienne, je regarde toutes choses, tout ce que ce monde pourrait m'offrir, comme une perte. En comparaison de ce que j'ai trouvé dans l'excellence de la connaissance de Christ (Grec :"une connaissance qui surpasse tout"), je méprise tout le reste comme des ordures."

Cette précieuse expérience de Paul est le principe universel de la vie chrétienne. Pour gagner Christ, se l'approprier tout entier, être trouvé en lui (verset 9) dans sa communion, au dernier jour, il faut faire la perte de tout ce en quoi l'homme naturel met sa confiance, être prêt à tout abandonner. (Matthieu 10.38,39 ; 16.24,25)
