7 à 10 Nous retrouvons ici et dans les trois versets suivants la forme habituelle de la maxime (distique). Cette collection ne nous a fourni jusqu'ici que deux exemples de ce type, qui en revanche était seul représenté dans le recueil 10.1-22.16.

Le sot assiste aux assemblées délibérantes (à la porte) ; mais n'ayant pas la sagesse nécessaire pour se former une opinion et l'opposer à celle des autres, il garde un silence prudent, qui lui procure au moins l'apparence de la sagesse (17.28).

Plusieurs traduisent : Pour le sot la sagesse est une perle trop précieuse. L'idée est la même. Disons seulement que ce qui rend possibles ces traductions si différentes, c'est le fait que le même mot hébreu peut signifier choses élevées et choses précieuses, d'où joyaux, perles, corail (Job 28.18).
