Car je suis plus stupide que personne, littéralement : Je suis une brute, de façon à n'être pas un homme. Agur est sincèrement préoccupé du désir de connaître la vérité, mais il déplore de n'avoir pas une raison capable de déchirer le voile qui lui dérobe la vue des choses cachées en Dieu (Job 11.7-9 ; Romains 11.33). Voir aussi Socrate disant qu'il n'était sage qu'à proportion qu'il savait ne rien savoir (Diogène Laërte II,.5-7).
