Coupable : tel est le prononcé même de l'arrêt.

Sa prière... imputée à péché. Quand un homme a tari dans son cœur la source même de repentir, la prière que lui arrache la détresse seule est sans efficace ; elle constitue même, en regard des fautes dont il ne s'humilie pas, comme une dernière offense envers Dieu (Proverbes 28.9). Le souvenir de Saül consultant l'Eternel sans obtenir de réponse et finissant par évoquer l'ombre de Samuel, constitue comme une lugubre illustration de cette pensée (1Samuel 28.6,11).
