10 à 12 Le châtiment des méchants.

Que sur la tête... Cette parole fait contraste avec ce qui vient d'être dit de la protection qui recouvre la tête de l'oint de l'Eternel. Si le texte primitif de ce verset n'a pas subi quelque modification, on y retrouve les irrégularités apparentes qu'offre parfois, par l'effet d'une violente émotion, le langage de David. Voici la traduction littérale : La tête de ceux qui m'assiègent, que l'iniquité de leurs lèvres les couvre. Comme le dernier mot du verset 9 : ils s'élèveraient, ne semble pas se rattacher d'une manière bien intime à ce qui précède, on a supposé qu'il appartenait primitivement au verset 10, ce qui donnerait le sens suivant :

S'ils élèvent la tête, ceux qui m'assiègent,
Que l'iniquité de leurs lèvres les recouvre !

L'image qui se présente ainsi à l'esprit est frappante. On voit s'élever une tête orgueilleuse ; mais elle est aussitôt recouverte de l'ignominie que cet orgueilleux a désirée pour son ennemi. Il est seulement difficile de se représenter comment une phrase aussi claire aurait pu être et rester mutilée, de manière à revêtir la forme qu'elle a dans nos manuscrits.

L'iniquité de leurs lèvres : le mal qu'ils ont souhaité et préparé pour d'autres. Sur le double sens du mot que nous traduisons ici par iniquité (hébreu, amal : malice et malheur), voir Psaumes 7.15, note.
