Contre toi. Cette parole fait comprendre tout le sérieux de la prière du psalmiste. C'est la haine de Dieu qu'il discerne chez les méchants qui l'entourent ; la gloire de Dieu réclame donc leur châtiment. Nous ne pouvons méconnaître cependant qu'une révélation plus complète de l'amour de Dieu, jointe à une connaissance plus complète aussi de l'état de péché où se trouve tout homme, a amené plus tard le peuple de Dieu à prier pour la conversion des pécheurs, et non pour leur destruction. Il n'en est pas moins vrai que l'apôtre Paul, sans perdre de vue le salut des coupables, va parfois jusqu'à les livrer à un terrible jugement (1Corinthiens 5.5 ; 1Timothée 1.20 ; Actes 13.11). Et quand saint Jean parle de péchés qui vont à la mort (1Jean 5.16) il pense sans doute à ceux qui sont inspirés par la haine de Dieu. Comparez Matthieu 12.32. En tout temps d'ailleurs on a vu à l'œuvre dans le monde social ou religieux des tendances où s'incarne si visiblement l'esprit du mal que, tout en désirant la conversion des individus, on ne peut que demander à Dieu d'extirper ce qui vient de son ennemi.
