1 à 3 Cet appel miséricordieux à la repentance est la transition au sujet du chapitre 2.

Race... Le terme hébreu est, non am terme plus noble, mais goï, expression un peu méprisante pour désigner les païens : la multitude, la masse.

Sans pudeur : proprement qui ne pâlit pas, c'est-à-dire qui est inaccessible à la honte et à la crainte.

Exhortation à la repentance. (Sophonie 2:1-3)
Jugements contre certaines nations. (Sophonie 2:4-15)

Dans ce texte, le prophète appelle à une repentance universelle, seule solution valable pour éviter une ruine totale. Une nation qui ne recherche pas Dieu, méprise en fait Ses bénédictions ou Sa grâce, elle ne désire pas se repentir, ni corriger ses fautes. Elle ne peut être que rejetée par Dieu, puisqu’elle éprouve aucun désir de Lui plaire ;

Ceux à qui Dieu pourrait dire : « écartez-vous de moi », mais proclame en fait « rassemblez-vous afin de rechercher Ma face ! » D’après la Parole, nous savons ce que le décret divin va apporter aux pécheurs impénitents, à l’inverse de tous ceux qui se repentent quand il en est encore temps.

Nous devrions veiller à rechercher la paix avec Dieu, avant que le Saint-Esprit ne nous délaisse ou qu'Il cesse de lutter en notre faveur, avant que la période de la Grâce ne se termine, avant que notre sort éternel ne soit déterminé !

Que les pauvres, les méprisés et les affligés recherchent l'Éternel, qu'ils cherchent à comprendre comment pratiquer Ses ordonnances afin d’être contrits par leurs péchés ! L'espérance d'être délivré du Jugement à venir est conditionnée par la prière...
